What is the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation?
The Mifflin-St Jeor Equation is one of the most accurate methods to estimate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) — the number of calories your body burns at rest to support essential functions like breathing, digestion, and blood circulation. Introduced in 1990, it offers improved accuracy over older formulas and is widely trusted by health and fitness professionals.
Mifflin-St Jeor Formula:
- For men: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age in years) + 5
- For women: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age in years) − 161
Parameters:
- Weight: in kilograms (kg)
- Height: in centimetres (cm)
- Age: in years
- Gender: affects the constant used at the end of the formula
This formula gives you a personalised estimate of your daily calorie requirements at rest. Once calculated, your BMR can be used to determine your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) by factoring in your activity level — helping you plan your diet and fitness regime more effectively.
